Bird-friendly Coffee

The first priority with the Nova Scotia Bird Society is the protection and conservation of our birds. This is why we are so excited to announce a partnership with two Canadian retailers of Smithsonian certified Bird Friendly© coffee.  Birds and Beans and Avia.

Instead of clearing rain forest, Smithsonian Bird Friendly© certified coffees grow underneath shade trees that sequester carbon, fight climate change and provide habitat for birds.  Many are migratory species whose impressive journeys can take them from the rain forest to the backyards of Nova Scotia.

According to the Smithsonian, "Three-quarters of the world's coffee farms destroy forest habitat to grow coffee in the sun and often use harmful pesticides and fertilizers that poison the environment.  Research has found only sixty one species of birds in sun grown coffee, which is the vast majority of coffee consumed.  Although some brands advertise as shade grown - and it is a help - they found only marginally more species, seventy nine.  But in Smithsonian Bird Friendly© plantations, researchers found more than three times the number of species, 243.  When forests disappear, migratory songbirds disappear, too.” Not only is Bird Friendly© organic, most of the farms are fair trade as well. This is the toughest certification for a coffee plantation to meet when it comes to protecting the birds and the environment.

And if that was not enough reason, both roasters offer a percentage of their sales back to the Nova Scotia Bird Society. This money will be used only for bird conservation efforts here in Nova Scotia.

To order coffee from one of these roasters, go to their web site.  To order from Avia, go to https://www.cafebirdfriendly.org/products/in-support-of-the-nova-scotia-bird-society. Choose the Puffin bag to support the Nova Scotia Bird Society.
