Field trips are open to non-members as well as members. Feel free to phone or e-mail the field trip leader or contact person ahead of time to obtain further information, directions or restrictions (e.g. dogs are not normally allowed on field trips). Registration is usually required to help manage group sizes and everyone will be asked to sign a waiver.
Ideas and suggestions for future trips are welcome. You do not need to be an expert to lead a field trip, and the trip does not need to last all day. You just need to share your favourite birding spots. Any questions, comments or suggestions, as well as all field trip reports should be directed to the Events Coordinator. Email: fieldtripcoordinator@nsbirdsociety.ca
Regular membership meetings typically feature a guest speaker and normally take place on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Meetings are held September, October, January, February, March, April and May. The annual general meeting (AGM) is held in November.

2026 NSBS annual “Out of Town” weekend.
Please join us for the birding weekend of the year to be held at one on the most renowned birding destinations in Eastern Canada - Brier Island!
This will be held over the weekend of June 6th and 7th.
We will start at 7.30 Saturday, 6th (to match the ferry’s arrival at 10 minutes past the hour) with a walk from Brier Island Lodge over to Gooseberry Cove, along to Seal Cove and Northern Light ending with a short walk back to our start at the Lodge (suitable footwear and clothing to take into account the terrain and weather on the island is recommended).
The 1pm field trip will be at Big Meadow Bog with its wonderful accessible boardwalk to check out its fantastic flora and fauna (if you are not familiar with this project the NSBS has been a major supporter of the construction of this over the years).
Saturday evening sees us having a social gathering in Westport (location TBA) evening speaker along with snacks/ light refreshments and merchandise available for purchase.
On Sunday morning we will have a “Discover Brier” trip around the major birding hotspots such as Gull Rock Road, Pond Cove, Lighthouse Cove /Western Light /
Pea jack Cove - all names you may have heard off and wondered where they are ! (Carpooling recommended for this field trip).
You can then head back to the ferries or carry on birding for the rest of the day.
This early notice will allow folks to arrange accommodation or plan trips up from metro etc. (it is 1 1/2 hours from Digby to Westport including ferries and this offers a larger range of accommodation than the island).
Ferry Information:
East Ferry to Tiverton departs on the half hour.
Freeport to Westport departs on the hour.
Please note trip leaders and evening speaker TBA.
You must pre-register for this event to allow for us to plan accordingly.
